Stuart Nielsen, director of restaurants for Condé Nast International, said: “Turkey and the Ukraine are both exciting emerging markets with a strong appetite for luxury brands in retail and hospitality. Vogue Café and GQ Bar address this powerful consumer desire.” Nielsen said more openings would be announced in the coming months, including in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
Condé Nast will also launch men’s title GQ to a Turkish audience for the first time in March next year. The magazine, edited by Mirgun Cabas, will be published under a licensing agreement between Condé Nast and the Dogus Media Group. Love it, hate it, don’t care about it? (Source: MediaWeek)
You’ve heard me profess my love for kayaking before (I’m a pretty bad-ass paddler if I must say so myself), so it was only a matter of time ‘til I took my skills to the seas. Manhattan Kayak Company, owned and operated by Eric Stiller and Brian Maxey, takes off from The Frying Pan… so you can have your beer and burn it off too…
@Jetsetfarryn: By no means did I plan my kayaking trip in the Hudson around #FleetWeek….
A Hong Kong chef (Guy Lieu) in the heart of Chinatown where Wise Man’s Broth and Mai Fun Noodle Soup are as easy to come by as chopped salads and Chai Lattes in Chelsea. Yet the write-it-down menus and no frills decor set the spot apart. Dungeness Crab, fresh Sea Bass and the makings of a perfect Spicy Sunday spot.
There’s a reason travelers venture to the easternmost tip of Long Island to spend long weekends in Montauk. Its Brooklyn-meets-Malibu vibe attracts artists and musicians, families and singles, out-of-towners and locals alike. Montauk is the go-to getaway for those looking to escape, to stay under the radar and away from the sceney side of the Hamptons.
A few years ago Surf Lodge set the standard for a new kind of Montauk escape, with its relaxed and charming yet modern vibe. And where Surf Lodge might remind you ofGidget and beach bonfires, the brand new Ruschmeyer’s is your very own Camp Nowhere. Read my full review here…
There are Lobster Rolls and then there are Lobsta’ Rolls (cue the Long Island accent) and Lunch is the best of the best south of Maine. The Lobster Roll Restaurant was purchased in 1965 by Frederick H. Terry Sr., and his Dad; Richard C. Terry Sr. when it was a tiny roadside clam shack on the Napeague stretch. The Lobster Roll Resto was coined as “Lunch“ (ya know, like me… and JetsetFarryn) and the rest is history. You can enjoy the Mac-n-Cheese, you can down some Fried Oysters, but let’s be serious… it’s all. about. the. roll.
@JetsetFarryn: Me and a Lobster Roll at @Lunchlobroll. Hanging in the kitchen with the cute chefs… Lucky me.
Pit Stop. Vickis Veggies. Saturday. 3 PM.
I love the road from East Hampton to Montauk, especially when the road has hidden gems like Vicki’s Veggie stand. This East Hampton-based farmers mini-market specializes in organic and locally farmed produce. So stop on Montauk Highway and pick up strawberries, local beets and some seriously delicious zucchini bread.
There’s just something about Sunset.... maybe it’s the Ibiza-esque shoreline dotted with Yachts or the St. Tropez vibe a-top it’s famed restaurant. Occupants spill from the boats onto the beach, some staying for the entire summer, others just for cocktails and dinner. André Balazs’s (yes we met, and it was epic) chic, hip hangout has set the tone for East End getaways since it opened in the late ’90s. This summer, see and be seen at this retro spot, just a short ferry ride from the more hectic Hamptons. There’s always time for mojitos and music…

This summer, there’s a new sheriff in town. First Name: South. Last Name: Pointe…. And he’s raising the bar for tunes off of 27. South Pointe Nightclub (in the old RdV East space) opened in South Hampton with a weekend full of David Berrie, Funkagenda, Drek Martinez and Calvin Harris; Avicii and Max Vangelli followed suit. Some icing on the party-cake? The spot is equipped with palm trees, cabanas and a euro-vibe… so see you on the flip side. Questions or concerns? Sripraphai Tipmanee came to New York 33 years ago starting out as a nurse. Turns out, she’s nursing me back to life post-Hamptons partying the best way possible: with spicy, saucy, noodle-filled food. Fried soft shell crab, Rad-Na, dumplings, Tom-yum shrimp, Bu-Du sauce rice, Yellow (karee) curry and more…. yeah, let’s sing a song called “I Ate The Place“… and I guarantee so would you.

I believe in nothing more than my sisters, so it’s no surprise (despite it being Miami, in June) that I hopped down south for Austyntatious’s first solo-gallery show. From prints to plexi, the show featured some of her best work and was only a small sign of things to come. Peep the pics, enjoy the view just don’t ask for your very own “Clutch”… it’s officially sold out.

Coachella counting down-teens and over-the-Zoo adults hoped aboard the ferry to Governors Island for this year’s Governors Ball. The one-day, two-stage event featured some of the biggest and best live acts in electronic, dance, hip-hop and indie music; Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Empire of the Sun, Passion Pit DJ Set, Das Racist, Neon Indian and Big Boi took over the isle (which is evidently the soon-to-be home of NYU Freshman) for twelve, straight, sunny hours. I loved the fun-for-the-whole family vibe; Governor’s Ball skewed more classy than trashy as opposed to most of the festivals we’ve seen this year…. VIP being worth it - hooray for skipping the ferry line and separate seating (kudos to the Fest makers for seriously well organized transportation. But, it’s a good thing Girl Talk sprayed the crowd with toilet paper – he had something to clean up his mess of a set with. Read my full review here…

I first blogged about Not a Gallery in December for my Gift It Guide… and my obsession has only grown since meeting the handsome and charming Mr. Belmont face-to-face. Not a Gallery offers contemporary art for sale online, and now you can snag your own ready-to-hang pieces from two Hampton locales - inside the uber-cool Tenent Shop and The Bulls Head Barn in Southampton. So stroll on by and start-up a decidedly not-snobby art debate. Call yourself a connoisseur, I won’t tell….
I can’t pretend, or play it cool. I am stoked to flee the NYC and make my way to a little place known as the Hamptons. What’s on my radar? Here are the first five stops I’ll be making…
Stay. Ruschmeyer’s Montauk. I’m heading to Montauk tonight to check out the revamped Second House via the The Surf Lodge folk. Ruschmeyer’s looks like my Indian Summer dream equipped with 19 ‘cabins’, a locally-sourced restaurant, bar and beer garden - located minutes from the beach, and on 3 acres of lush, lakeside woodland. Expect a full report tomorrow, but don’t expect me to leave… I have a feeling my Lake Bryn Mawr roots might get the best of me…. rumor has it that Ruschmeyer’s is full of tee-pees, tree-houses and hammocks. I don’t joke about tee-pees… or tree-houses… or hammocks.
Party. South Pointe. This Memorial Day Weekend, there’s a new sheriff in town. First Name: South. Last Name: Pointe…. And he’s raising the bar for tunes off of 27. Friday night, South Pointe Nightclub (in the old RdV East space) opens in South Hampton with a weekend full of David Berrie, Funkagenda, Drek Martinez and closing out with Calvin Harris and The Chainsmokers. Some icing on the party-cake? The spot will be equipped with palm trees, cabanas and a St. Tropez vibe… so see you on the flip side. Questions or concerns? Contact Jonathan Schwartz, just say JetsetFarryn sent you.
So it’s been a while, but don’t hold it against me. I missed you too… Here’s my month (or two) in recap… From start to finish. Go!
@jetsetfarryn: Iced coffee and jean shorts and soccer and long days and Happy Hours and Hamptons anticipation and music, lots of music. Happy Spring.
Dig In. Momofuku Fried Chicken. Thursday. 7 PM.
Ok, it’s not my first rodeo. Show some self control and don’t order much before the main event. If you must, opt for the pork buns, roasted foie gras and cornflake encrusted brisket. As for the chicken? Taste the Southern style infused with old bay seasoning, and the less-heavy, triple-fried Korean-style in bibim sauce. Expect pancakes, a bowl of veggies (shisito peppers, baby carrots, red ball radishes, shiso leaves, bibb lettuce, opal basil, Thai basil) and four sauces on the side (hoisin, ginger-scallion, jalapeño-garlic, and bibim).
Use your hands, combine it all, get weird with your bad self. Chang’s personal favorite? Crisp skin from the classic chicken, chunks of meat, bibb lettuce, both kinds of shiso, hoisin sauce, and ginger-scallion sauce. De-lish.
Don’t judge me for what is about to happen RT @JonAlagem @amandaweiner @jetsetfarryn @JFSica @djpolitik @MikeyLev #MomofukuFriedChicken
Any place that calls themselves a “joint” better earn it… a tip-off from a friend (why-thank-ya-Sklaver) led me to Paul’s Da Burger Joint on St. Marks and Second Avenue. Run down, beat-up, ripped checkered table clothes and the smell of oil in the air…. I was already sold. And then came the burger. A juicy, no frills, fresh off the hot plate burger that melted — just like the American cheese — in my mouth. I don’t mean that in a lazy, cliche way. I mean that literally, it melted. It’s the Jim’s Philly Cheese Steaks of New York burgers, and considering that’s my Philly-born Father’s #1 spot in the world, it a huge compliment.
For the first time in a long time I made an executive decision: no work at play. And while it was hard to put down the pen, festival-going sans deadline was a much needed break. All in all, Coachella was as you’d expect but not 2010. I’ll be honest, I left a bit disappointed. Let’s hope they kick it up a notch next year, and kick out the Creator’s Project (seriously, that was it?)
Wake up to @FreelanceWhales. Sunshine. Palm Trees. @Coachella
The Twelves at Highline Ballroom. Thursday. 11 PM.
Here’s what I knew about the Twelves. They’re from Rio (point). They’re the boys behind the remix of M.I.A’s “Boyz” (point). Their show has drum machines (point). So I went with some friends to check them out at Highline Ballroom. João Miguel and Luciano Oliveira (of the “12th” of July, 1980) have been jamming together since 2005 and it’s no surprise. Their set was as smooth as it’s latin beats with some electro funk on the side. Refreshingly tasty. Check out HiFi Cartel for more coverage…

I heard rumblings of Brushstroke and immediately knew it was a stop worth making. First, it’s David Bouley. Second, it’s a project in conjunction with the Tsuji Culinary Institute in Osaka (uh, I miss Japan). Third, its been in the works for a decade (postponed after to 9/11). Fourth, it’s located in a dreamy, sandy-wood space in Tribeca.
Now, Brushstroke is not for everyone. It’s a deceivingly informal setting for a very formal tasting experience; there’s an a-la-carte menu, but you’d never dareorder from it; and the kitchen is open, but you will not hear a peep from the Chefs. In many ways it’s representative of that traditional side of Japan (we’re talking impeccable, over-the-top-service and care) that often makes me turn into a red-faced, giggling middle school girl who just hit a boy for the first time. I mean the intricate, cultural presentation? Like my first time getting a flirt-text (yes, that exact smile)…. and the food? Well, you don’t need a metaphor for that. Just sit down and eight-course Omakase-it (お任せ).

In case you hadn’t noticed, I type… a lot. And in case you haven’t heard me complain about it yet, the typing is starting to wear on me. So a good friend hit purchase for acupuncture treatment on Gilt City. I crossed 14th Street (it’s located on 56th), checked in and checked out this thing they call acupuncture for the first time. Acupuncture Remedies was spotless, inviting and extremely profesh. They explained the process and what to expect when ‘puncturing. Most importantly, it was a relaxing experience…Just get over the needle part by pretending it’s a challenge on the Amazing Race. Not that I did that or anything…

Dance. Avicii at Pacha. Saturday. 2 AM. What would a Manic Month be with out Mr. Avicii? Boy wonder played to a sold-out-house this month at Pacha. He’s raising in the ranks, and so are Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano - the duo who joined him for a debut performance at Pacha. Avicii will be back on my radar this summer since he’ll be hanging in the Hamptons at South Pointe. Never heard of it? Oh, you will soon.

Watch. The Bang Bang Club. Sunday. 5 PM. I rarely report on movies… but with Tribeca Film Fest on the radar this month, I’m making an exception for an exceptional film. The Bang Bang Club is the real life story of a group of four young combat photographers - Greg Marinovich, Joao Silva, Kevin Carter and Ken Oosterbroek – who risked their lives to document life in South Africa post-apartheid. They documented the first free elections, the gang wars and the lives of those in turmoil and well, war in the 1990’s. Starring Ryan Phillippe, Taylor Kitsch, and Malin Akerman, The Bang Bang Club was intense, moving and extremely graphic. More importantly, it told a story I truly did not know, or see, or understand. I really learned something new. So open your eyes with The Bang Bang Club and see their Pulizter prize winning photography here… #BangBangClub and #ramen on a rainy night #iloveny
Forget me, let’s talk about that bag. My good friend Ryan launched Fashion. Love, Africa after a life changing trip to well clearly, Africa. The bags are hand knitted and constructed from post consumer plastic bags gathered and woven by female residents living in the garbage slum of Nakuru, Kenya. Each bag is purchased directly from the woman who constructed it, allowing her a consistent source of income. It is a truly incredible program that I am thrilled to be able to support. Bag your own bag at Fashion. Love, Africa.
It’s family, what can I say? But more than family, it’s about talent. And I’m proud to call my friends TAL-EN-TED. Derek Giddon and Andrew Wotman have been playing to rowdy crowds in NYC, and will be heading out to the Hamptons this summer. Want to score a front row spot? Just tell them @PinkCashmereNYC.
Festival of Ideas for the New City was a three-day event, that featured over eight independent projects and public spaces designed to share new ideas. Some zest (or organization) was missing from the fest, but overall, a great idea for ideas. Highlights included Kickstarter (I’m simply a fan), The Bushwick Art Park project and Art in Odd Places (with works by Nicholas Fraser, Edith Raw, Ari Tabei and Gretchen Vitamvas). But my favorite, Bayeté Ross Smith’s community playlist, The Bowery Mixtape, which I left my mark on with “Heads Will Roll” …don’t judge my mixtape song selection.

Wait. Scott Weiland at Gramercy Park Theatre. Tuesday. Midnight.
I went to Scott Weiland with the Pink Cashmere family (@ Gramercy Theatre w/ 13 others). I don’t even know what to say. He showed up late. He pissed me off and not in the I-wish-I-was-a-rockstar-kind-of-way. Scott Weiland, no points or blog chitter chatter for you!
@jetsetfarryn: #ScottWeiland is 3 hours late due to a “book signing”… Rightttt a “book signing” #rockstarfail
The new restaurant, CO-OP, is housed in the not-sure-who-it-was-space in lobby of the Hotel on Rivington… and it’s all about community (shared tables, small plates) and mixing (seriously, the mixologist is a genius). The tufted brown leather walls harkens a 1970’s Playboy vibe, yet the food is anything but retro. Executive Chef John Keller (Le Bernardin, Nobu) and sushi chef Stephen “Neo” Wong (Sushi of Gari, Megu, Sushi Hana) serve up Stanton Social-esque party plates with a seriously special Asian/American appeal.
Start with a Ginger Snap or Pink Bazooka cocktail (yes, I said Pink Bazooka, but it was pretty, and delicious, so deal with it); then move on to a Paper Cut Salad with Jalapeno dressing or a Kale Caesar with Asian Pear. Next, to the sushi. Fluke Crudo, Hamachi Crunch or the Rivington Roll with Blue Crab. It’s hard to slow down, but the intriguing art (DeVinn Bruce & John Rawlins designed the space with a graphic photography installation of New York City icons such as Moby, Debbie Harry, Patricia Field & oh, Alan Philips girlfriend – lucky!) can help distract. Chicken Meatballs with Sweet Chili Sauce, BBQ Pork Belly Steamed Buns, Cod on Butter Lettuce, Lobster Cappucinos (two please) and polenta… creamy, delicious polenta. Top it all off with some desert – and no, I do not mean your charmingly clumsy and cute waiter (Alex, I’m talking about you). We’ve got the Guerilla Culinary Brigade (Alan Philips and the adorably welcoming Jason Apfelbaum, the duo behind dining event company and my-main-marketing man Derek Feinman) to thank for a new lounge in the LES. You’ll find me there on Thursdays, 9 PM, booth in the back…. The only question - what’s a girl gotta do to get a portrait around here?
Falling in love at CO-OP… Polenta, fluke crudo, lobster cappuccino, pork belly buns, cute waiters. Good way to go #rapture
I’d forgo a Petra-physique for the right plate. What can I say? I’m down with degustation. Every year San Pellegrino gives us a guide to world’s greatest restaurants with in-depth profiles, dishes and menu structure, a geographical range of the winners and more. Dive in.
My weekend recap… from start to finish, go! Tasting menus to Tequila to Textiles to TV…
Try On. Textile Jeans, E & J. Wednesday. 9 pm.
Tequila and textiles? Count me in. I joined my good friends from Elizabeth and James to launch their new denim line this week at Tacombi. The jeans pull from a Penny Lane place with a 70’s vibe and patchwork pockets. I haven’t taken them off, and I haven’t gotten them hemmed yet. Maybe that’s why I feel down the stairs at Tammany Hall this weekend. Lesson learned: Get your jeans, and hem them too.
Stuff Face. Torissi. Thursday. 9 pm.
I love me a good tasting menu. Honestly, I do. But to agree to one on a date? Well that’s daring even for me. Thankfully Torissi and I got along swimmingly; we smiled over Sweetbreads, laughed over Island Duck and swooned over Skate. There’s something to be said for a great guy (um, I mean resto) who doesn’t brag or get over-dressed, and leaves it up to substance. A tasty-treat sans fuss? Now that’s my kinda man. Torissi, I’ll accept a second date. Just be sure to bring the wine-pairing.
Dance. The @Knockz at Tammany Hall. Thursday. 11 pm.
Over 1,000 people showed for the first Popshop at Tammany Hall earlier this month. And there are a few reasons why. First, the killer location in an annex on Orchard Street. Second, the peeps behind Crash Mansion suited up the place with a large stage (notably), a Prohibition-style basement and an upstairs balcony with its own bar. Third, the lineup which included the Knockz this past Thursday. Give me a boy on a mic and drum-pad and I am sold. This sound is special, so catch them this week at the Studio at Webster Hall. I’ll be the girly groupie in the front. Thanks to the Pancake Man for a great plan.
From D.C to Kaskade & me, here’s a weekend full of home-grown, all-naturale, organic beats and eats. My weekend recap, from start to finish…. Ready, steady go!
Travel. Fly - On-Air. Train. Thursday. All Day.
So I flew to Washington DC on Thursday morning to appear on Let’s Talk Live… let’s just say I learned few lessons.
1. The @US Airways Shuttle? Umm, not so much. After 3 hours of delays and runway resting, I realized there’s only one good thing about this so-called shuttle: the variety and plethora of business men, curiously pondering why I’m on the 6 a.m to DC. Oh good mornin’….
Ok so no I wasn’t at the Regatta. Or the University of Michigan. But you know what, here’s how I passed the time in NYC. And I think that you’re the one who missed out. My weekend recap, from start to finish…. go!
Drinks. Collective. Friday. 11 PM.
I rarely touch on drinking dens in the Meatpacking and for good reason: they come and go like an old, fickle friend (the one that shows up every year just in time to pop bottles on your birthday) ; they can be dangerous (some genius out there is making a documentary called “Heels & The Meatpacking: A Life Long Battle”) and it’s truly not open to everyone (Alex, door man extraordinaire, why do you pretend like you haven’t known me since I was 15!? You’ve actually emailed me - personally - twice). But the Collective, the new joint brought to you by the STK & Bagatelle peeps, says no to the notions of West Side elitism. You won’t find a bottle-only policy here; instead you’ll find pop-art made by Craiglist connoisseurs (think legos in the brick walls and chairs made of street signs) and an open-late menu (the Harlem = chicken and waffles). But let me be clear: this new ‘tude still comes with one heavy line. Just say B.Neuman at the door, you’ll tots be taken care of.
The new Andaz on Fifth Avenue has a lot of things going for it – a unique location across from the New York Public Library, a mod-Asian design and a delicious… I’ll say it again… delicious new restaurant. Casual yet refined, The Shop features an open kitchen and dining room with a communal table, perfect for when the entire family comes into town. It’s open for lunch and dinner; but the breakfast had me sold with Avocado on Brioche and a dash of Cayenne pepper. Not to mention that Chef Roberto Alicea uses all local ingredients... there’s Pastami from Katz’s, coffee from Blue Bottle and even some Sullivan Street Bakery sweets.Sounds too good to be true… and tasted so too.
There are very few things that I hold sacred but for some reason the Manhattan Vintage Show is one of them. Since I moved to NY, this day marks the beginning of a new season: the temperature drops, I donned my vintage best and head out to Metropolitan Pavilion for nothing short of entertainment. As Lynn Yaeger from the Village Voice puts it: “To fully appreciate the lavish scope (and plunder potential) of the last 100 years or so in fashion, world-famous createures visit this traveling vintage-clothes road show that alights now and again in Manhattan.” This year, I dragged Pattymayo116 with me - it was a successful event to put it mildly.
I’ve been scouring the city for new spots; some hidden gems, random oldies and buzzed about babies. Make no mistake, I’m not a foodie - but my curiosity, and hungry friends, keeps my meals interesting. In honor of Restaurant Week, here’s whats on my resto radar… what’s on yours?
There’s something simple about a staple like Gemma - a place where you can have your bread and drink wine too… but as I sat, pinned up against the bar at Keith McNally’s new resto in the Lower East Side, I realized that Pulinos might not have that same ease about it. Sure, you can make a reservation, unlike its compadre at the Bowery Hotel, but don’t expect for it to be honored. It’s only Wednesday, and it’s packed, and my reservation was for 35 minutes ago.
Downtown actors mix with Uptown bankers inside the deceivingly new space; it looks like it has been here for years, with exposed brick, tin ceilings and vintage light fixtures casting that signature McNally golden glow. But if you can make it past the gate, the simplicity of Pulinos becomes clear:you come here to eat, and watching the people while you wait is just part of the experience. Pizza is the main event, served out of the open kitchen; four varieties of prosciutto, five types of bruschette and a variety of breakfast items such as the Salsiccia pizza, with eggs, bacon, white cheddar and sausage, served until after midnight. Give in to the calories, just don’t give up your spot at the bar.
Like every other New Yorker, waiting on line, hung-over at Clinton Street Bakery proved to be very ineffective. Solution: find two strapping, young, Lower East siders, send them there around 10 am and leisurely make your way back over around noon. Thus far it has worked swimmingly, arriving at the door of CSB like a well-respected regular and simply snagging a seat.
Husband and wife Neil & DeDe had no clue what they were in for when CSB first opened in 2001. Their mission: to make some killer, hand-made baked goods for the ‘hood. Little did they know that their pancakes (specifically the famous blueberry batch), buttermilk biscuits, muffins and pies would be named the ‘Best in NYC’, along with their entire brunch and breakfast menu. Think brioche French toast with roasted pecans, caramelized bananas and warm maple butter (tastes like caramel); truffled fried eggs and asparagus with roasted artichokes, bacons lardoons and truffle vinaigrette; or the classic country breakfast with three eggs any style, ‘cure 81’ ham steak, hash browns and a biscuit. If you can’t find a swain-on-hand, head back at night when the line thins and the light dims. Yes, that means pancakes after dark…
Sometimes we need another perspective… so we sent Ian Ross out into the wilds of Montreal to report back on our suggestions, as well as his favorites. Here’s a special edition of Top 5 Thursdays, Top 10 style… with serious @Jetsetfarryn and I.Ross love.
Montreal is not shy about its nightlife. And they’re not playing around either. Be prepared for iPads at the door of Montreal’s newest club, Velvet Speakeasy. This vamp-meets-prohibition spot has got all the goods for a wild night out. Just don’t jump on the couches… or Bobby the doorman might give you a bite.
Although it’s within easy strolling distance of many of Montreal’s best boutiques, bistros and bars, Opus Montreal is a hotel you may be loath to leave. Frequented by the celebrity, socialite and style-savvy sets, this 136-room design standout is one of Montreal’s most striking addresses. Opus Montreal suits the hip traveler well, from its slew of high-tech in-room amenities to its hypercool restaurant, Koko. Stylish yet not pretentious, Opus is a minimalist marvel with personality.
BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW: @ShakeShack Sets Up Shop in South Beach via J. Goldglantz
Here at @Jetsetter we often watch online as the line at Shake Shack grows; waiting patiently until the right moment to jump out of the office and grab a burger (sans onions, its just courteous.) So we thought it was only right for us to give South Beachers’ a heads up. With it’s first location outside New York opening it’s doors on Lincoln Road, this New York staple is sure to impact Miami’s coast in a big way. Miami’s coast, not your waist line. Restaurateur Danny Meyer’s new venture into South Beach has given Jetsetters another reason to head down South…
With the help of Raffaello Hotel’s General Manager (and long-time friend) Jared Galbut, and his fashionable fiancee, we’ve put together our list of things to do/see/try/taste on the Gold Coast of the windy city. So live like a local…
1. Bongo Room The Bongo Room is known as the best brunch in Bucktown. It’s quirky design (pistachio painted walls, fuzzy fruit murals and experimental artwork) and eclectic music choices make it a Saturday morning favorite. The french toast, red velvet pancakes and eggs benedict are a must. Wash it all down with a bloody mary.
Since its introduction into the New York food scene, Momofuku Ko has brought both a feeling of fear and exhiliaration to my otherwise settled stomach. T-Minus 24 Hours: Mental preparation begins. T-Minus 12 Hours: Starvation. T-Minus 0 Hours: Show. No. Fear. It’s all just preparation for the Amazing Race. Check Top 5 Thursday: Go to Ko for the full review.
Upfront. Adult Swim Party with M.I.A. Wednesday. 10 PM.
At some point, many moons ago, I was just an odd girl, obsessed with an obscure Sri Lankin rap artist. Now, I’m still an odd girl, but my feverish love for M.I.A. is socially acceptable. M.I.A, also known as Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam is a british songwriter, producer, rapper, designer, artist, activist and rapper known for pushing the limits. She came out of the shadows in 2009 with her hit “Paper Planes” and was named as one of the World’s Most Influential people by Time Magazine. M.I.A got me through my deep, dark, artistic days with songs like Amazon, Fire Fire and Bucky Done Gun. Now, she’s repping major TV networks with her ‘fan favorites’. M.I.A., oh how you’ve grown.
Sexy, sunny and smart, the Standard Hotel in Miami Beach is redefining the way we think about spa hotels. Near enough to South Beach to be close to the action but far enough to be relaxing, the property is like no other in town. With a spa that has treatments like “Hurts So Good” and “It’s All in Your Mind,” the Standard is something new in a city that’s seen it all. Dont miss the Kabbala string-inspired pool pass bracelets, in a different color every day, the funky, coed Turkish hammam spa and Bingo Sundays. Just beware, the host’s got a dirty mouth.
I’ve eaten in a Burmese temple. I’ve dined in a Bedouin tent. But never has such a culinary experience come straight to me, until now. Outstanding in the Field is a roving culinary adventure that’s been setting up shop since 1999. This resto-sans-walls places its classic, blonde wood table on mountain tops, in sea caves, at ranches or farms, just to name a few. Art is sacrifice and in the case of Japanese stylist Mita Shiniti, some good ol’ Nike Dunks were on the chopping block for her recent ‘Tenki’ exhibition at Gallery Speak For in Tokyo. Inspired by continuity, the exhibit features hundreds of all white Nike releases. With alien-like sculptures and killer photographic pieces, the deconstructed dunks have been laid to rest. For Trump to trump himself is a pretty hard feat. But with the opening of Trump Soho he’s managed to lur in a new kind of crowd, one sans the Birkin Bags and mini-pooch pups. Kastel Lounge, the masculine, dramatic and ultra sexy hotel lounge, oozes with confidence. Fendi furniture meets Taschen books amidst club kids and restaurant-goers, ready for a night out on the town. Just don’t get lost in the crowd because its a hot one.

And the mood it was… was hungry. Pop in the Pop Up here.

It doesn’t take much to get me to a concert. It also doesn’t take much to get me to a museum. The I-should’ve-been-an-archeologist in me squealed at the chance to see Passion Pit this Friday atThe American Museum of Natural HistoryPlanetarium. They took to the stage complemented by a space-age-spectacular light show by Feuvoz. The inaugural event in a series called “One Step Beyond,” the Rose Center for Earth and Space came close to transforming into a dome at Ultra…. c.l.o.s.e. The venue proved to be out of this world, but the one bar situation really got on my nerves.
