Not So Basic, Hotel Basico.

Hotel Básico is just the juxtapose you’ve been jonesing for: a perfect mix of modernity and Mexico. Located in the heart of Playa del Carmen, only a few steps away from the Caribbean sea and white sand, Basico (designed by Central de Arquitectura, José Sánchez and Moisés Ison; Interiors by Omelette, Héctor Galván) presents an industrial contemporary vision, classic natural elements and a cool, chic crowd.

Find industrial tank pools reminiscent of the oil industry, classic films projected outdoors at night and soccer balls and fins in the bedrooms. If the floating beds, sexy beach scene and steamy, sweaty nights aren’t enough to get the blood flowing, floor to ceiling windows serve as voyeuristic bedroom walls. So be sure to flaunt all of the fun you’re having… (photos via Hotel Basico)

Travel Tuesday

Travel Tuesday: Endemico. Mexico.
Also known as the hotel version of Master P’s classic “Make Em Say Uhh”
Seriously, no seriously, have staggered boxes ever been so beautiful? On a secluded hill in the wine-growing region of Valle de Guadalupe, these luxury cabins bring guests into direct contact with nature. Blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, the mountain views and wine-growing soils are the perfect place to post up. It’s as isolated as owners Carlos Couturier and Moisés Micha planned it to be. Situated just one and a half hours from San Diego, California… did you hear that? I said get in your car.

Top 5 Thursday: Bar Tab.

#

There’s something romantic and timeless about a good old-fashioned hotel bar, a place where weary business travelers, twittering tourists, trysting couples and in-the-know locals can all feel at home, if only for an hour (or four). Belly up to any one of these classic hotel bars — some flashy, some understated — for a made-to-order cocktail and good conversation, both equal parts to a great happy hour. So grab a bar stool and sip it…

Miami. Soho Beach House.
This beachfront refuge dazzles with its unique vintage furnishings and attractive crowd of bonafide artists and eccentrics. Currently one of the city’s most sought after hotels, no two rooms here are alike; each feels like a different showroom. The hopping pool and bar scene are a modern-day revival of old Hollywood glamour, but the perks — fresh truffle pizza, in-room bartender service, a Cowshed Spa — are the kind you won’t be able to stop tweeting about.

Mexico City. Distrito Capital.
On the top four floors of an office building, Distrito Capital is a chic sky pad above the urban bustle. Despite its location in the upscale business district of Santa Fe, the black-and-white property is a destination for creative types who mingle amid mid-century modern furnishings: tulip tables by Eero Saarinen, angular chairs by Wim Rietveld and futuristic lamps by Verner Panton. At night, the sleek lobby and pool area go from low-key to high-voltage as Mexico City’s style-makers mix with high-profile hotel guests over mezcal.

Top 5 Thursday: Cinco de Mayo

#

Colorful parades, folk dancing, mariachi bands and margaritas — now is the time to celebrate the Mexican victory over a European army more than 150 years ago. And what better way than to bring the party back to the land where it all began? Mexico is so diverse that there are seemingly endless ways to tailor an experience. We’ve whittled down your options, from romantic cliffside escapes and hot urban hangouts to private beach spots and wilderness retreats. All that’s left to decide is which trip (and bikini) suits you the best…

Esperanza.
 Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Don’t Miss: Hand and foot massages by the pool…
Esperanza is a dramatic cliffside retreat in Cabo San Lucas that’s been drawing the celebrity set for several years. Gone is the typical Cabo Wabo tequila-swilling party crew of the spring break era. Instead, guests find peace and tranquility among gorgeous pools with unmatched views of the Sea of Cortez.

Travel Tuesday.

!

This isn’t your Spring Break Acapulco. Bali meets Mexico in pagoda-topped villas with heated horizon pools, flowing jungle-clad cliffs and a secluded sapphire bay. Glass walls bring dazzling sunsets into bedrooms perched on stilts above the sea. It’s tempting to rely on the impeccable room service and never leave your airy sanctuary at all, but Thai massages and hibiscus margaritas are just enough to lure guests to the intimate spa and inviting restaurants, with the lights of Acapulco providing an evening display over nearby bays… aka have your Mandara and the view too at the Banyan Tree Cabo Marques, Acapulco.

Hotel. Zamas Tulum.

Soak up a chill Caribbean vibe down the street from ancient Mayan monuments at this beachside resort. Laze the day away, sipping on lethal margaritas and swinging in colorful hammocks in open-air palapa-roofed cabanas. There’s eco-friendly touches like solar showers and a laid-back vibe which means shoes are optional. Hammocks, check. Hammocks, check. Hammocks…. check.
