Escaping a Teepee at Escape to New York Festival

!

Escape to New York had a lot on its plate… and I’m not just referring to the World’s Largest Festival Brunch, which was planned to kick off on Sunday. The first-year festival on the Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton billed itself as more than just a three-day music event — like its sister festival in the UK, Secret Garden Party, Escape to New York promised an interactive experience of art, music, food, camping and culture (and by culture, I mean hipster culture)

The festival catered to a fancier crowd (after all, this is Southampton), one that expected on-site glamping with suped-up teepees, private performances and catered food by Fat Radish; while festival-goers expected an indie-happy lineup headlined by Edward Sharpe and Patti Smith, an off-the-radar dance tent and the convenience of raging the day away, in the comfort of their Hamptons ‘hood.

Although the 3-day party was cut short due to bad weather on the reservation (yes, I woke up in a soggy teepee with a soaked cell phone), Saturday proved successful enough for Escape to New York to announce that they’ll be back next year….

Next year, already? A bit soon, no? Clearly, this British bunch has a hold on the teammates-in-tank-tops who raided the empty lot off Route 27 for 3 days (did I feel like I was crashing a private party? Yes, yes I did), but a star-studded campsite does not a festival make. So let’s backtrack and face some facts…. [My HuffPo review]

Plus.
Thank goodness for Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros who brought in an enthusiastic crowd on Saturday night. The stage, equipped with a busted NYC Taxi, was enough to impress the most cynical of cynics who compared this first-ever fiesta to Coachella. A calypso-inspired, steel-drum rendition of “Home” brought the creative set to a close. This was exactly the type of act that Escape to New York needs. One to keep your indie mantras, but draw a large crowd too. (Did their private performance on Sunday at the Mondrian diminish the importance of said show? Yeah, a bit).

Founder Freddie Fellowes’ creative vision was brilliant. The festival was in fact full of surprises, pop-up performances and secret stages. This Midsummer’s Night Dream was a delightful change from the standard three-stage triangle formation we are used to finding during festival season. I loved the bicycle-driven musical Toad who played some of the best music I heard all weekend and the dance-off ring (and by ring, I mean an actual wrestling ring aka wedding ring) hidden deep inside the foggy forest.

Xaphoon Jones (of Chiddy Bang) spun an electric set on Saturday night. There’s nothing better than an out-of-nowhere, out-of-this-world DJ set, especially when most of the festivals this seasons have been on a recycling binge. Heilbronn, Duvall and Alex English rocked out too.

Teepees and safari tents are winners, in theory….

The Minus.

When you say glamping, I expect glamping. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some mud, but when someone shouts “G” for glamorous, I leave my supplies at home. Sans the bed, mirror, lights, bug spray and amenities of our promised “package,” these were just teepee shaped tents. Good thing I’m always Amazing Race ready.

Asia Dogs, Standard Hotels, Milk Studios, Soho House, Veuve Clicquot, Fat Radish, Urban Daddy — there were super sponsors everywhere. And yes, there were some great acts (The Vaccines, Au Revoire Simone, Edward Sharpe) but put your money where the cash is. If E2NY had put just one art installation or chic-boutique on hold, they could have brought in a big name; and a big name draws a big crowd, and a big crowd brings energy. And energy was the one thing this clan forgot to buy. On Friday, they expected 5,000 people and according to The Guardian, 1,000 attended at max. (Side note: I lived for the low-key, well mannered and easy-going staff. If their attitudes were a result of the small crowd, it was still a great result.)

Despite the cheap cigarettes, Shinnecock proved to be a poor location choice. We weren’t really wanted there, as evident by the quick cancellation of the event on Sunday, and by the odd placement of the campsite off of 27. Second, the standard Native American-inspired garb found at fests (I’m 100% guilty of it) suddenly seemed inappropriate. While there was major space to roam free in the art-filled forest, the late-night ride to the grounds felt a bit like the start of a scary movie — and not even a good one.

Oh, and did I mention there was no liquor?

I’ll never turn my back on innovation, and in that department Escape to New York wins. Winkel & Balktick produced a forest full of fantasy from the Panda Pit to the robotic Gamelan Orchestra. But what E2NY really needs is to get out of their own way. We get it, you’re the cool kids (I mean, Alexander Skarsgård probably stayed in your teepee — we saw him roaming the campsite during a surprise set from Gary Clark Jr.), but cool kids won’t fill acres. We will. Fans like me who love to fest, be it with Best Coast or Boyz Noize, will fill your field with fire.
And some fire is exactly what you need.

oundup of my favorite things this week…
Escape to New York Style.
Let’s get glamping!

Festival. Escape to New York.
Any fest with a manifesto is alright by me, and Escape to New York has one for the books. What makes a good party? What you do, not what you see; Who you meet, not who you see; and what you make happen, not what you watch happen…. Born out of the Secret Garden Party in the UK, the quirky Escape to New York Festival is taking over the ancient lands of the Schinnecock Indian Nation in Southampton this weekend. The mystical music includes Patti Smith, Best Coast, The Vaccines, Alex English, Rich Medina, VHS or Beta and of course, Edward Sharpe. There’s stages and tents and art and teepees and creation galore. Yes, I said teepees, but more on that later.

Music.
Au Revoir Simone.
There’s something about Au Revoir Simone. Three girls from Brooklyn, two vocalists, two keyboards and one drum machine makes for melancholic melodies. There’s a Corner store sound to the instruments and a Middle school garage band sound to the vocals. It’s like the Cranberries met the Juno Soundtrack…. but I like them, I really like them, and their synthy sweetness. So take off from your teepee for this trifecta.

Paris Remix ft. Au Revoir Simone; Shadows

Eat. World’s Largest Brunch.

Escape to New York is making big moves on Sunday… moves towards a record breaking brunch. They’ll be attempting to knock the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s biggest brunch at a live music event. The menu, by Silkstone, will include fresh fruit, yogurt and granola, avocado toast with 6-minute eggs and the traditional English dish, Bubble and Squeak. Of course OJ, Bloody Marys and Champagne will be on hand… just in case this brunch bunch gets rowdy.

Manic Month!

!

From Miami to Montauk, from start to finish…
Here’s my month in recap
Ready, set, go!

Paddle Out. Manhattan Kayak Company.
Wednesday. 6 PM.

You’ve heard me profess my love for kayaking before (I’m a pretty bad-ass paddler if I must say so myself), so it was only a matter of time ‘til I took my skills to the seas. Manhattan Kayak Company, owned and operated by Eric Stiller and Brian Maxey, takes off from The Frying Pan… so you can have your beer and burn it off too…

@Jetsetfarryn: By no means did I plan my kayaking trip in the Hudson around #FleetWeek….

A beautiful sunset in #NYC… #ViewFrom http://lockerz.com/s/104785649

Dip It.
Dim Sum a Go Go.
Sunday. 8 PM.

A Hong Kong chef (Guy Lieu) in the heart of Chinatown where Wise Man’s Broth and Mai Fun Noodle Soup are as easy to come by as chopped salads and Chai Lattes in Chelsea. Yet the write-it-down menus and no frills decor set the spot apart. Dungeness Crab, fresh Sea Bass and the makings of a perfect Spicy Sunday spot.

Sleep. Ruschmeyer’s -Montauk.
Friday. 5 PM.

There’s a reason travelers venture to the easternmost tip of Long Island to spend long weekends in Montauk. Its Brooklyn-meets-Malibu vibe attracts artists and musicians, families and singles, out-of-towners and locals alike. Montauk is the go-to getaway for those looking to escape, to stay under the radar and away from the sceney side of the Hamptons.

A few years ago Surf Lodge set the standard for a new kind of Montauk escape, with its relaxed and charming yet modern vibe. And where Surf Lodge might remind you ofGidget and beach bonfires, the brand new Ruschmeyer’s is your very own Camp Nowhere. Read my full review here…

Dig In. Lunch Lobster Roll.

Saturday. 1 PM.

There are Lobster Rolls and then there are Lobsta’ Rolls (cue the Long Island accent) and Lunch is the best of the best south of Maine. The Lobster Roll Restaurant was purchased in 1965 by Frederick H. Terry Sr., and his Dad; Richard C. Terry Sr. when it was a tiny roadside clam shack on the Napeague stretch. The Lobster Roll Resto was coined as “Lunch“ (ya know, like me… and JetsetFarryn) and the rest is history. You can enjoy the Mac-n-Cheese, you can down some Fried Oysters, but let’s be serious… it’s all. about. the. roll.

@JetsetFarryn: Me and a Lobster Roll at @Lunchlobroll. Hanging in the kitchen with the cute chefs… Lucky me.

Pit Stop. Vickis Veggies.

Saturday. 3 PM.

I love the road from East Hampton to Montauk, especially when the road has hidden gems like Vicki’s Veggie stand. This East Hampton-based farmers mini-market specializes in organic and locally farmed produce. So stop on Montauk Highway and pick up strawberries, local beets and some seriously delicious zucchini bread.

Chill Out. Sunset Beach.
Sunday. 1 PM.

There’s just something about Sunset.... maybe it’s the Ibiza-esque shoreline dotted with Yachts or the St. Tropez vibe a-top it’s famed restaurant. Occupants spill from the boats onto the beach, some staying for the entire summer, others just for cocktails and dinner. André Balazs’s (yes we met, and it was epic) chic, hip hangout has set the tone for East End getaways since it opened in the late ’90s. This summer, see and be seen at this retro spot, just a short ferry ride from the more hectic Hamptons. There’s always time for mojitos and music…

Dance. South Pointe.
Saturday. Midnight.

This summer, there’s a new sheriff in town. First Name: South. Last Name: Pointe…. And he’s raising the bar for tunes off of 27. South Pointe Nightclub (in the old RdV East space) opened in South Hampton with a weekend full of David Berrie, Funkagenda, Drek Martinez and Calvin Harris; Avicii and Max Vangelli followed suit. Some icing on the party-cake? The spot is equipped with palm trees, cabanas and a euro-vibe… so see you on the flip side. Questions or concerns? Contact Jonathan Schwartz, just say JetsetFarryn sent you.

@JetsetFarryn: Big night. Big moves. Big love. @Schwartzjon. @SouthPointeNY. @TheChainsmokers. @CalvinHarris.

Devour. Sripraphai Thai Restaurant.
Sunday. 8 PM.

Sripraphai Tipmanee came to New York 33 years ago starting out as a nurse. Turns out, she’s nursing me back to life post-Hamptons partying the best way possible: with spicy, saucy, noodle-filled food. Fried soft shell crab, Rad-Na, dumplings, Tom-yum shrimp, Bu-Du sauce rice, Yellow (karee) curry and more…. yeah, let’s sing a song called “I Ate The Place“… and I guarantee so would you.

I apologize for what I’m about to do to some Tom-Yum and Kao Soy (@ Sripraphai Thai Restaurant w/ 4 others) http://4sq.com/jIylL2

View. A Controlled Substance by Austyntatious.
Saturday. 8 PM.

I believe in nothing more than my sisters, so it’s no surprise (despite it being Miami, in June) that I hopped down south for Austyntatious’s first solo-gallery show. From prints to plexi, the show featured some of her best work and was only a small sign of things to come. Peep the pics, enjoy the view just don’t ask for your very own “Clutch”… it’s officially sold out.

Shake It. Governors Ball Music Festival.

Saturday. 1 PM.

Coachella counting down-teens and over-the-Zoo adults hoped aboard the ferry to Governors Island for this year’s Governors Ball. The one-day, two-stage event featured some of the biggest and best live acts in electronic, dance, hip-hop and indie music; Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Empire of the Sun, Passion Pit DJ Set, Das Racist, Neon Indian and Big Boi took over the isle (which is evidently the soon-to-be home of NYU Freshman) for twelve, straight, sunny hours. I loved the fun-for-the-whole family vibe; Governor’s Ball skewed more classy than trashy as opposed to most of the festivals we’ve seen this year…. VIP being worth it - hooray for skipping the ferry line and separate seating (kudos to the Fest makers for seriously well organized transportation. But, it’s a good thing Girl Talk sprayed the crowd with toilet paper – he had something to clean up his mess of a set with. Read my full review here…

Explore. Not a Gallery at Tenent.
Sunday. 3 PM.

I first blogged about Not a Gallery in December for my Gift It Guide… and my obsession has only grown since meeting the handsome and charming Mr. Belmont face-to-face. Not a Gallery offers contemporary art for sale online, and now you can snag your own ready-to-hang pieces from two Hampton locales - inside the uber-cool Tenent Shop and The Bulls Head Barn in Southampton. So stroll on by and start-up a decidedly not-snobby art debate. Call yourself a connoisseur, I won’t tell….

Wear it Wednesday.

$

I love nothing more than dressing the part, especially when the part is that of a Hamptons resident. It’s the time of year when I move my moves East of Manhattan and shack up in Sag Harbor. A place where jean shorts can get you anywhere (except into Sen at 9 pm) and small town luxuries come in the form of Lobster Rolls. Whether you’re on a boat in the harbor, a house on a hill or taking a bed at Barons Cove Inn, Sag Harbor is a timeless escape that’s as much a classic, as it is a hot spot. Sometimes it’s not just where you go, but what you wear when you get there…

Why You Should Rush to Ruschmeyer’s….

@

Spend the summer in carefree anarchy at Ruschmeyer’s, a hot new spot in low-key Montauk where kids can be kids and adults can…well, be kids too. Set on three acres of woodsy lakeside land, Ruschmeyer’s (originally built as a camp in 1952) has been brought back to glory with 19 fresh and clean cabins, a teepee, a sandy beer garden, a chic communal restaurant and a happening bar. Expect a 1970s bohemian vibe; it’s the type of hotel where face-painted kids roam as if they own the place and couples lounge in hammocks until the day ends. You can listen to live music in the Magic Garden, play bocce in the beer garden or share a punch bowl with friends at the Electric Eel Disco. You can have an Indian Summer escape, and your kids can too.

Top 5 Thursday: Hello Hamptons!

#

I can’t pretend, or play it cool. I am stoked to flee the NYC and make my way to a little place known as the Hamptons. What’s on my radar? Here are the first five stops I’ll be making…

Stay. Ruschmeyer’s Montauk.

I’m heading to Montauk tonight to check out the revamped Second House via the
The Surf Lodge folk. Ruschmeyer’s looks like my Indian Summer dream equipped with 19 ‘cabins’, a locally-sourced restaurant, bar and beer garden - located minutes from the beach, and on 3 acres of lush, lakeside woodland. Expect a full report tomorrow, but don’t expect me to leave… I have a feeling my Lake Bryn Mawr roots might get the best of me…. rumor has it that Ruschmeyer’s is full of tee-pees, tree-houses and hammocks. I don’t joke about tee-pees… or tree-houses… or hammocks.

Party. South Pointe.

This Memorial Day Weekend, there’s a new sheriff in town. First Name: South. Last Name: Pointe…. And he’s raising the bar for tunes off of 27. Friday night, South Pointe Nightclub (in the old RdV East space) opens in South Hampton with a weekend full of David Berrie, Funkagenda, Drek Martinez and closing out with Calvin Harris and The Chainsmokers. Some icing on the party-cake? The spot will be equipped with palm trees, cabanas and a St. Tropez vibe… so see you on the flip side. Questions or concerns? Tidbit. StndAIR Takes Flight

!

There are very few things as fab as a sea plane… With my Hamptons anticipation at an all-time high, Standard Hotels introduced the StndAIR seaplane shuttle (seriously!? I dare you to be hotter). StndAIR takes off from 23rd Street and the East River with weekly scheduled flights from Thursday - Monday to East Hampton. The sexy 8-seat Cessna can take you anywhere you want within a 300 mile radius of Manhattan.

To top it off, Mr. Stan D’arde is playing a little game called Flight Board. Try and fill a sea plane with your friends - first seat $30 (sorry seat taken), second seat $95 (and the winner is @Rosszboss), the next $145 and so on, and so forth. So let’s get this charter started! To book your seat or to charter the plane, please visit StndAIR or call 855-STND-AIR (786-3247) or email Reservations@StndAIR.com.

Manic Monday: Shore to Shore

!

It’s been a wild month. Between Bonnaroo and July 4th, I’ve barely had a moment to catch my breath. And then, these past few weeks have been all about losing it again with inspiring pop-up tech and the Jersey Shore. Ready, steady… go. It’s Manic Monday, summer-style.

Note: Some restaurants have been withheld in order to wow you with a special Resto Week post… check back Thursday for the juicy details.

Inspire. @CreatorsProject.
Country Hoping. 12 Hours.

You’re probably sick of hearing about it but… Jetsetter partnered again with our friends at Vice Magazine to give away two tickets to the Creators Project London. For those out-of-the-know, The Creators Project is a partnership between Intel and Vice Magazine that self-describes as,”a new network dedicated to the celebration of creativity and culture across media, and around the world.” The New York event kicked off a series of five Creators Project events around the world with stops in London, Sao Paulo, Seoul, and ending with a three-day grand finale in Beijing. Each stop features performances, screenings, and exhibits highlighting the fusion of technology and creativity.Check out my video of the New York exhibit and check back soon… we may or may not be sending one lucky fan to Rio (wink).

Brunch. @Back Forty.

NYC. Sunday. 11 AM.

Ok, I’ll admit it. I was trying for Clinton Street Bakery, but with a three-hour wait, I had to search for an alternate. Enter Back Forty - a sustainably minded spot on Avenue B where a seasonal cocktail or dish isn’t as boring as it may sound.  Grab a spot at the twelve-seat bar or one of the communal wooden tables where you can annoy your neighbor with questions about their order (I totally did not do that). Order the Pork Jowl Nuggets with Jalapeno Jam (just don’t try getting a side of Jam, they negged me on that one) and Poached Eggs with Whitebean Ragout on Toast. But the real ticket is the Chicken with Waffles. Don’t skimp on the syrup.

Note: En-route to Back Forty, stop at one of the many small gardens in the area. Be sure to dance like a weirdo… it’s a great way to wake up.

Manic Monday

!

Weekend recap from start to finish… go!

Note: For the next few months, expect an expanded Manic Monday.
Sometimes a weekend just won’t cut it.

Dinner. Momofuku Fried Chicken.

Wednesday. 7 PM.

I ain’t no chicken when it comes to food. But after testing my limits at Ko, a treat was in order. And what’s better than one brought to you by David Chang. Momofuku Noodle Bar is as minimalist as the rest of the restos, with blonde wood stools and booths ready for the taking. Show some self control and don’t order much before the main event - but if you must, opt for the pork buns, roasted foie gras and cornflake encrusted brisket.  And then there was chicken - the southern style infused with old bay seasoning and the less-heavy triple-fried Korean chicken in bibim sauce. Expect pancakes, a bowl of veggies (shisito peppers, baby carrots, red ball radishes, shiso leaves, bibb lettuce, opal basil, Thai basil) and four sauces on the side (hoisin, ginger-scallion, jalapeño-garlic, and bibim).

Use your hands, combine it all, get weird with your bad self. Chang’s personal favorite? Crisp skin from the classic chicken, chunks of meat, bibb lettuce, both kinds of shiso, hoisin sauce, and ginger-scallion sauce. De-lish.

Snack. East End Clambake.

Friday. 6:30 PM.

Something about summer screams seafood. And after the long drive from the city, East End Clambake is the perfect pit stop. Stock up on classics like lobster salad, steamed mussels, littleneck clams and calamari. Makes sure to snack on the famous Lobster Roll or Seared Tuna with wasabi mayo. With clients ranging from Sony Music to Oprah, you can’t go wrong. Don’t let the modest appearance fool you - with Captain Phil Gay (and ex commercial clamdigger) at the helm, you’re sure to get the freshest fishes in the sea. If only I could say the same thing about Dune.

Party. Dune Southhampton.

Everynight. Midnight.

Disclaimer: I am by no means objective.

With friends at the door, dj booth and behind the scenes, Dune Nightclub can feel more like my high school prom than a seasonal hotspot. But that doesn’t  mean it’s not one of the best places to head out when heading out East. Located in the former Cain/Jet East space, Dune has managed to mix its old sexy-surfer vibe (though we do miss the old Tarzan ropes) with a new city-chic design that highlights the DJ Booth in the main lounge. And it should. Dune hosts some primetimers like @JusSke, @PeteTong and @DJBerrie and fan favorites like @DJTannerNYC and DJ NickCohen who spun some serious skills this past weekend.

@SchwartzJon and the peeps behind Marquee have slipped some staying power into the booze because despite RDV and Lillypond being on the nightlife radar, Duners stick to what they know. And rumor has it that Jason Derulo and Juliette Lewis may perform in the parking lot this summer. Now thats my kind of party.
