Sit Down. Lauren Bush.

?

Lauren Bush is an Elite Model, a Princeton graduate, a photographer, and a kick-boxer. She has appeared on Friends, been named one of the World’s Sexiest Vegetarians (pretty uncommon for a born-and-bred Texan) and made it on Vogue’s best dressed list (twice). She is the niece of President George W. Bush and granddaughter of George H. W. Bush, and the soon-to-be wife of David Lauren (son of Ralph Lauren). And yet, the most impressive fact about this dynamic 26-year-old is her work traveling the world to find ways to help address huge and important hunger and nutrition crises, through what she knows best — fashion.

In 2007, Lauren Bush launched FEED Projects in conjunction with the UN World Food Program. Her signature FEED bag, a stylish carryall whose proceeds pay to feed one child, for one school year, is now known worldwide as a symbol of hope, love and philanthropy. In honor of Earth Day, I sat down with the CEO, Creative Director and co-Founder of FEED to discuss the epidemic of world hunger, her love of local markets and how to find a bit of the Lauren Bush magic in your own life… and check out Lauren’s favorite Good and Green Hotels now on Jetsetter.

JetsetFarryn: Your work has been so inspired by your travel experiences. Is there one moment that stands out as truly transformational?

Every trip, I feel like I have another moment. And it’s not always about the trip but also about thinking through things after. But, the first trip I took to Guatemala with the UN Word Food Program was really an eye-opening experience.

Top 5 Thursday: Get Green With It

#

I’ll be the first to admit that travel is not the most eco-friendly hobby to have (Coachella = planes, cars, shuttles) but travel can be responsible, and not just in the hardcore voluntour-kind-of-way. In honor of Earth Week, here are my mean, green travel dreams for 2011…

1. Roadtrip… in a Tesla
From America’s West to the Amalfi Coast, it’s no surprise that road tripping is on my to do list. So it’s a good thing that Tesla creates electric cars that are actually… well, electric. On the road since 2008, Tesla Roadsters are more upscale, more varied and, quite frankly, just plain cooler than the traditional idea of an electric automobile.

2. Eat, drink and buy local… in Nicaragua

Don’t be tempted by Starbucks and snow-globes! Support the surrounding community by stocking up on local snacks and souvenirs. There’s no better way to learn about a country than through its’ local traditions, crafts and of course, food, and this year I’m in need of Nicaragua (the best gift I got this year was this pack of presents from a friend in Nicaragua).
Providing exclusive access to one of Central America’s lesser-known ecological treasures — the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve — Rio Indio Lodge has the benefit of being near both the rain forest and the Caribbean on the Costa Rica–Nicaragua border… a perfect place to fill my stomach, and suitcase.
