Top 5 Thursday: Bar Tab.

#

There’s something romantic and timeless about a good old-fashioned hotel bar, a place where weary business travelers, twittering tourists, trysting couples and in-the-know locals can all feel at home, if only for an hour (or four). Belly up to any one of these classic hotel bars — some flashy, some understated — for a made-to-order cocktail and good conversation, both equal parts to a great happy hour. So grab a bar stool and sip it…

Miami. Soho Beach House.
This beachfront refuge dazzles with its unique vintage furnishings and attractive crowd of bonafide artists and eccentrics. Currently one of the city’s most sought after hotels, no two rooms here are alike; each feels like a different showroom. The hopping pool and bar scene are a modern-day revival of old Hollywood glamour, but the perks — fresh truffle pizza, in-room bartender service, a Cowshed Spa — are the kind you won’t be able to stop tweeting about.

Mexico City. Distrito Capital.
On the top four floors of an office building, Distrito Capital is a chic sky pad above the urban bustle. Despite its location in the upscale business district of Santa Fe, the black-and-white property is a destination for creative types who mingle amid mid-century modern furnishings: tulip tables by Eero Saarinen, angular chairs by Wim Rietveld and futuristic lamps by Verner Panton. At night, the sleek lobby and pool area go from low-key to high-voltage as Mexico City’s style-makers mix with high-profile hotel guests over mezcal.

Manic Monday

!

Ok so no I wasn’t at the Regatta. Or the University of Michigan. But you know what, here’s how I passed the time in NYC. And I think that you’re the one who missed out. My weekend recap, from start to finish…. go!

Drinks. Collective.
Friday. 11 PM.

I rarely touch on drinking dens in the Meatpacking and for good reason: they come and go like an old, fickle friend (the one that shows up every year
just in time to pop bottles on your birthday) ; they can be dangerous (some genius out there is making a documentary called “Heels & The Meatpacking: A Life Long Battle”) and it’s truly not open to everyone (Alex, door man extraordinaire, why do you pretend like you haven’t known me since I was 15!? You’ve actually emailed me - personally - twice). But the Collective, the new joint brought to you by the STK & Bagatelle peeps, says no to the notions of West Side elitism. You won’t find a bottle-only policy here; instead you’ll find pop-art made by Craiglist connoisseurs (think legos in the brick walls and chairs made of street signs) and an open-late menu (the Harlem = chicken and waffles). But let me be clear: this new ‘tude still comes with one heavy line. Just say B.Neuman at the door, you’ll tots be taken care of.

Breakfast. Andaz Fifth Avenue.
Saturday. 11 AM.

The new Andaz on Fifth Avenue has a lot of things going for it – a unique location across from the New York Public Library, a mod-Asian design and a delicious… I’ll say it again… delicious new restaurant. Casual yet refined, The Shop features an open kitchen and dining room with a communal table, perfect for when the entire family comes into town. It’s open for lunch and dinner; but the breakfast had me sold with Avocado on Brioche and a dash of Cayenne pepper. Not to mention that Chef Roberto Alicea uses all local ingredients... there’s Pastami from Katz’s, coffee from Blue Bottle and even some Sullivan Street Bakery sweets.Sounds too good to be true… and tasted so too.

Loving the clean, dark woods and communal tables at the shop… (@ Andaz 5th avenue) http://4sq.com/aNkhQM 10:28 AM via foursquare

Manhattan Vintage Show.
Saturday. 1 PM.

There are very few things that I hold sacred but for some reason the Manhattan Vintage Show is one of them. Since I moved to NY, this day marks the beginning of a new season: the temperature drops, I donned my vintage best and head out to Metropolitan Pavilion for nothing short of entertainment. As Lynn Yaeger from the Village Voice puts it: “To fully appreciate the lavish scope (and plunder potential) of the last 100 years or so in fashion, world-famous createures visit this traveling vintage-clothes road show that alights now and again in Manhattan.”  This year, I dragged Pattymayo116 with me - it was a successful event to put it mildly.
