Top 5 Thursday: Reasons to Rent a ‘Rod

#

Since 2003, Club Sportiva has offered the Exotic Car Experience, which grants everyone their God-given right to drive an Aston Martin past lustful gazes in California. It’s true: the world’s greatest sports cars (and Bentleys and Aston Martins) are just waiting to be driven through California Wine Country or down the coast. Choose your class of car — including Lamborghinis, Porsches and more — and set off on the weekend drive of a lifetime. Here’s five reasons why you should say yes, and press…. the petal to the metal, duh.

1 Chilling in Carmel Valley
Carmel Valley has some of the most beautiful stretches of road in the United States (and some of the most beautiful residents, naturally). So if you’re embarking on one of the most legendary drives in the world…you should really be driving one of the most impressive cars. Club Sportiva has been making that ambition a reality for drivers since 2003, with an eye toward bringing luxurious autos to a mass audience.

 2 Getting to pretend you’re a celeb in a Cribs-worthy ride.
The power of a serious engine revving is no joking matter. I think it’s safe to say I caught the bug at Skip Barber and am now a full blown car-a-holic. With three classes of cars to choose from, there’s something for everyone —  the Connoisseur Collection, the Elite Collection and the Enthusiast Collection. Details: Porsche 550 Spyder Replica, Lotus Elite, Bentley Continental Flying Spur, Ferrari F430 Coupe, to name a few….

It’s February and you’re sitting at your desk with the all too familiar mid-semester blues. And you may not be in college anymore (don’t worry, me neither), but its okay. It’s simply your body’s way of saying it’s time to plant the Spring Break seed.

Gift It.

$

Dear Santa,

Don’t tell me if I’ve been naughty, don’t tell me if I’ve been nice. Let’s be honest, we ALL know that answer to that. The only thing I need to know… is how to get my hands on these rockin’ gifts.

Art, for the sake of obsession… Royal #3 UltraChrome print with hand-painted acrylic gloss, drymounted onto 2’ deep birch wood by NOT A GALLERY’s Creative Direction, Justin Belmont. I know, that’s sexy.

There’s clearly someone (aka Luxirare) out there who is smarter than me… because this is bloody brilliant. Camera bag, meet my handbag. Handbag, meet my camera bag. And to top it all off, its freakin’ furry. Meow.

A good notebook never goes out of style. And Jasper + Black’s Archie Grand collection offers 120 pages of high quality paper to soak up your secrets. My picks: Photographers I Met And Liked, Travelers I Met And Liked… and of course, Capitalists.

Santa wouldn’t dare to bring me a gift and leave my baby Nikon empty handed. This holiday season, she’s getting suited up like Barney Stintson with Camera Amror which is heat stable up to 42- degrees Fahrenheit and 100% shock absorbent. Translation: she’ll be ready for the 2011 festival season. And I’ll be rocking these adorable Camera Lens Bracelets.

I’ve been living in Nikon nirvana these past few months. And then my friends at SPREADHouse had to bring me back to reality. While my D90 has been the perfect boy-toy, I’m a fickle gal, and someone else has caught my attention. Hello, D7000. Hello 16.2 MP DX-format CMOS sensor, 6 fps continuous shooting and Full. 1080p HD Movies. Amen.

Top 5 Thursday: The Splendor of Splendor

#

Ok, I have to say it. I’m jealous of those crazy cats aboard Carnival Cruise’s stranded Splendor ship. First off, I want to apologize for anyone who is going stir crazy on that ship, and say that this would never be the case if someone had been hurt. But since 1. the people on the ship have no internet and can’t read this, 2. as far as I know everyone is safe and sound, I’m going to lay out the reasons why it ain’t that bad to be on the big bad boat.

1. No Electricity = Buh bye twitter!

It’s just electricity. But a little au naturale never hurt anyone. With no crackberries and blow dryers you’d have time to relax, socialize, play cards, get to know your kids… now that’s priceless. Blackstone reports: “The pool and casino closed when the electricity went down; hot food and hot water became memories; air conditioning became nothing more than an open window or a nap on the open deck; and, perhaps worst of all, waste disposal has become a problem.” Honestly, this sounds a lot like Bonaroo.

Top 10 Thursday: Street View It

#

We can’t all travel all the time… but we can pretend to with Google Street View, the popular but controversial technology that provides panoramic, street-level views of locations across the globe. And today, you can watch cute little penguins chill out in Antarctica…

This marks the seventh and final continent to be added to the Street View Scene, so hop from Asia to Africa with out breaking a sweat, or your bank account…. I know, it’s not as good as the real thing, but it’s pretty freakin’ awesome.

1 Half Moon Island, Antartica

Top 5 Thursday: Game Changers

#

Millions of people work in travel, but some make or break it. Huffington Post’s Game Changers series celebrates 100 innovators, visionaries and leaders in 12 categories who, whether working in the spotlight or under the radar, are changing how we look at the world. Here’s my fav 5…

Tyler Brûlé. Monocle.

Changed the game by … defining style in a world with indefinable borders. Brûlé, the editor-in-chief of Monocle and author of the “Fast Lane” travel column for the Financial Times, is an evangelist for sophisticated world travel. His print (yes, print) monthly magazine Monocle charges $150 a year for a subscription, and makes a profit, because his globally eclectic sensibility and good style—and smart editorial eye that attracts reporting from around the world—are in such demand. He also runs an advertising agency, and has opened retail store/offices for Monocle in New York and Hong Kong. Up next? Sao Paulo.

Fun fact: Before Brûlé was a professional tastemaker he was a freelance war correspondent in Afghanistan. That career ended in 1994, when he was 25, and the jeep he was riding was attacked. He had bullets in both arms, and while he was recovering, his body filled with morphine, he had a vision. According to an interview with Businessweek, he then decided the most important things in his life were “friends,” “living in a great house,” and “wanting to travel and see the world.”

Top 10 Thursday: Ibiza - Part Deux

#

My first post on Jetset Farryn had to be good, so I spoon fed you my Top 5 favorite things to do in one of my favorite places. This time, I’ve teamed up with Miss W from @White Ibiza to give you a killer guide (if I may say so myself) to the crazy isle they call Ibiza.

Hit the High Seas.
Charter a luxury yacht and head for the neighboring island of Formentera, the place to see and be seen at beachside restaurants and cruising around the coast.

Frock Up in Style.
Flex the plastic and indulge in some retail therapy, Ibiza-style. Ibiza’s very own designer label, Kurru Kurru, makes bespoke disco dresses, spangly bikinis and full-blown couture creations perfect for a week on the white isle.

Dine Alfresco.
There’s no better atmosphere than the magical garden restaurant space at Aura for dining on modern tapas under the stars, with the smell of thousands of jasmine blossoms permeating the air, seven nights a week.

Take a Chill Pill.
The Ibiza Gran’s Open Spa is among the island’s best relaxation havens, boasting hydrotherapy and a sports pool, sauna and hammam, plus the world’s finest therapists on hand to soothe the aches and pains caused by a day by the pool.

Made up of tropical breezes, action-packed beaches and premier clubs, Miami is as hot as its beautiful people. DJ’s come from all over to play in front of gigantic crowds, giving people a place to escape from their daily routine. Don’t miss your chance to party, and stay at the Delano Miami on Jetsetter.

Top 5 Thursday: No Rest for the Restos

#

I’ve been scouring the city for new spots; some hidden gems, random oldies and buzzed about babies. Make no mistake, I’m not a foodie - but my curiosity, and hungry friends, keeps my meals interesting. In honor of Restaurant Week, here’s whats on my resto radar… what’s on yours?

Dinner/Brunch. Pulinos.

There’s something simple about a staple like Gemma - a place where you can have your bread and drink wine too… but as I sat, pinned up against the bar at Keith McNally’s new resto in the Lower East Side, I realized that Pulinos might not have that same ease about it. Sure, you can make a reservation, unlike its compadre at the Bowery Hotel, but don’t expect for it to be honored. It’s only Wednesday, and it’s packed, and my reservation was for 35 minutes ago.

Downtown actors mix with Uptown bankers inside the deceivingly new space; it looks like it has been here for years, with exposed brick, tin ceilings and vintage light fixtures casting that signature McNally golden glow. But if you can make it past the gate, the simplicity of Pulinos becomes clear: you come here to eat, and watching the people while you wait is just part of the experience. Pizza is the main event, served out of the open kitchen; four varieties of prosciutto, five types of bruschette and a variety of breakfast items such as the Salsiccia pizza, with eggs, bacon, white cheddar and sausage, served until after midnight. Give in to the calories, just don’t give up your spot at the bar.

Brunch. @Clinton Street Bakery.

Like every other New Yorker, waiting on line, hung-over at Clinton Street Bakery proved to be very ineffective. Solution: find two strapping, young, Lower East siders, send them there around 10 am and leisurely make your way back over around noon. Thus far it has worked swimmingly, arriving at the door of CSB like a well-respected regular and simply snagging a seat.

Husband and wife Neil & DeDe had no clue what they were in for when CSB first opened in 2001. Their mission: to make some killer, hand-made baked goods for the ‘hood. Little did they know that their pancakes (specifically the famous blueberry batch), buttermilk biscuits, muffins and pies would be named the ‘Best in NYC’, along with their entire brunch and breakfast menu. Think brioche French toast with roasted pecans, caramelized bananas and warm maple butter (tastes like caramel); truffled fried eggs and asparagus with roasted artichokes, bacons lardoons and truffle vinaigrette; or the classic country breakfast with three eggs any style, ‘cure 81’ ham steak, hash browns and a biscuit.  If you can’t find a swain-on-hand, head back at night when the line thins and the light dims. Yes, that means pancakes after dark…
