Miami Music Week - Moments Worth Mention.
Ferry Corsten: Give yourself this gift. Go alone. Stand in the middle. Listen to the music. Watch the crowd drop to Coldplay’s The Scientist (Maarten De Jong Bootleg).
Skrillex: “This song is for the girls!” said Skrillex, as he dropped a dubstep-mix of La Roux’s “In For the Kill.” He’s 23 aka watch out for this one….
David Guetta: Points for the Tron Machines but other than the usual crowd pleasing mix of Billboard Hits, Guetta announced the release of his next album on May 2. We’re certain Flo.Rida, who joined him on stage, will be part of it. Make me care Guetta, make me care.
Carl Cox: Mr. Cox, you win. While your performance did not reinvent the wheel, you provided a mombaton-inspired set, giving Miami just enough of that Latin flavor it so craves. Don’t worry, the crowd didn’t even notice those ancient beats… the ground-shaking set was one of the highlights of the entire weekend.
Afrojack: Officially the first artist to play three sets at UMF, Afrojack has taken over with fan favorite “Take Over Control.” With booze by his side, and a crowd full of screaming gals, Afrojack has made himself a household name…. and by household, I mean sorority.
Kaskade: My heart belongs to this Mormon-man turned DJ, but his set at UMF was, well, like every other festival set he has played this year. Yet despite the white balloons (dude, you dropped those at Coachella in 2010) and the track-to-track playlist of “Dynasty,” Kaskade procured one of the best sing-a-long sets of the weekend.
Deadmau5: Ok, that three minute monstrous build into “Right This Second?” Wowza.
Morillo: Ibiza-front man played some new Diddy tracks… We get it Sean Combs, you want to get into house music.
Avicii: The boy wonder of UMF played numerous performances that highlighted his love of upbeat mixes, beautiful vocals and classic house. There’s no doubt that Avicii knows how to make us dance, and dance, and dance we did. He sampled Kings of Leon’s “Sex on Fire,” a great example of the marrying of pop music and EDM at Ultra.
Armin Van Buuren: Armin performed to a roaring crowd on Sunday as one of the last acts in the A State of Trance Tent. Broadcasting live to Europe, it was his 500th ASOT radio show but more than the music, Armin focused on his love of technology and announced his partnership with Flowd, a GPS app that lets fans connect with DJ’s worldwide. As if I wasn’t already a stalker…
Steve Aoki: “Yeah, motherf****rs, this is your official wake-up call,” he yelled. “Are you ready to hit turbulence?” Cue the beat, cue the champagne swigging, cue the crowd surfing and spontaneous screaming. Rock star. Period.
Mstrkft: My #1 surprise of the weekend, the Toronoto natives played a range of deep bass, heavy textured tunes and unique mixes. In a festival full of electronica, this sound really stood out.
Laidback Luke: Laidback Luke, you’re hot. Who knew? Let’s talk.
Empire of the Sun: I wanted to care, but honestly, I didn’t.
Sander Van Doorn: New name, The Closer. He dropped Green Velvet – Flash (Nicky Romero Remix) and Tiësto vs. Marcel Woods – Don’t Ditch.
ATB: A little bit of ecstacy, ATB always spins some sexy, sultry sounds.
Fedde Le Grand: The music dilutes the music but Fedde Le Grand’s set list stood out: Wolfgang Gartner – Space Junk, ID with Daft Punk – Around the World (Acapella), Far East Movement – Like A G6 (ID) and Jordy Lishious – Lump.
Swedish House Mafia: I really am not the biggest fan, but playing around while you played around for 300 people at the Wall was fun. Yay. Oh and do me a favor, get your own festival weekend next year, ok thanks.
