Dec
Manic Monday.
!
When we do it, we do it big… so it’s no surprise that my loud-mouth and Cowboy boot-clad feet fit right in the Lonestar State. From BIG barbeque to a BIG Jetsetter Holiday bash… From Texas to the Tri-State, from start to finish… ready, steady, go!

Fly. New York to Houston.
Tuesday. Noon.

Stay. Hotel Derek.
Tuesday. 7 PM.
Located near swank shops and Houston’s art-gallery scene, the Hotel Derek is designed to feel like a superhip home, with 60s-style settees, English wingback chairs and cowhide rugs. The hotel works on the assumption that its guests have the same qualities as the fictional host, Derek: worldliness, a sense of humor and an eye for beauty.

Pit Stop. @Sonic.
Wednesday. Noon.
What on earth is more American than Sonic? It’s got everything you could possibly need. The laziest form of service (in your car), a fast-food meets diner menu (milkshakes, sundaes and burgers) and exclusivity (they’re a dying chain). If you see one, stop, and then tell @Jfsica… it’s her favorite.

#Required Stop en-route to #SanAntonio? @SonicDrive_In… Strawberry milkshakes, delicious. Gotta love the USA http://plixi.com/p/63130486 December 15, 2010 12:26:29 PM EST via ÜberTwitter

Learn. Alamo.
Wednesday. 3 PM.
It’s rumored to be a huge disappointment, and one of those things you should just skip over in San Antonio. But I have rule when traveling – find out for yourself – so I opted for an afternoon at the Alamo. Set in the middle of a cobblestone square, the Alamo served as home to missionaries and their Indian converts for nearly seventy years. While the facts surrounding the siege of the Alamo continue to be debated, there is no doubt that the battle has come to symbolize a heroic struggle against impossible odds — a place where men made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. The Shrine of Texas Liberty is historic, yes, and you should say you’ve “seen it” yes, but its also charming in a nostalgic way.
Here’s me, the #alamo and a slushie :) ha! RT @zachhonig: @jetsetfarryn Would love to see some pics #texas http://plixi.com/p/63171760 December 15, 2010 5:31:28 PM EST via ÜberTwitter

Roam. San Antonio.
Wednesday 4 PM.
Roam the Alamo grounds, meet the guy who guards the gates or play with the kids serving snow cones to sugar-deprived tourists. Buy embossed leather belts and ride the trolly. Try on a Cowboy hat, just don’t buy it. Get lazy, it feels good.

Dish. Smokehouse BBQ.
Wednesday. 5 PM.
I had one requirement on this Texas tour and that was BBQ, so I turned to the trusty New York Times for a suggestion. Enter Smokehouse: a rinky, run-down spot off Roland Avenue outside San Antonio. There’s no chance of getting lost, because a half mile away you’ll start to smell the meat-on-the-mesquite-wood pit. Grab a charred brisket sandwich or pulled pork platter. And if the food isn’t proof enough, check out the crowd of regulars (aka the entire San Antonio Police force) sitting in the back. It’s only extra validation that you’ve come to the right place.

This is so good, it can’t be legal. (@ The Smokehouse) http://4sq.com/a9tyu0 December 15, 2010 2:26:42 PM EST via foursquare

Stay. @Hotel Valencia Riverwalk.
Wednesday. 7 PM.
In a cowboy town like San Antonio, its easy to see why The Hotel Valencia Riverwalk is a hot new spot. It’s the perfect place to have your history and sophistication too with retro lighting, faux-fur throws, brown leather headboards and sexy amber lighting. Yet it’s right along the banks of the River so you can stroll under the illuminated lights at night after a drink or two at V-Bar, or take an afternoon stroll to the Alamo (3 minute walk). Classic and hip, and in Texas? Sounds like a new combination to me.

Dark leather, chocolate faux-fur & distressed woods in my bachelor-pad-esque room at @HotelvalenciaRW. Next up, dinner by the river #travel December 15, 2010 7:27:48 PM EST via TweetDeck

Party. No, Seriously. @Jetsetter’s Magical Mystery Tour.
Friday. 6 PM.
Star Wars music, a mandatory “sneakers only” attire and a cart of booze, on wheels. These were the clues handed to us as we stepped aboard a mysterious vehicle for what was promised to be the “best holiday party ever.” Next clue, a party bus; next clue, Queens; next clue, L.A.S.E.R. T.A.G, followed by Karaoke. Enjoy the three photos below because they are the only ones appropriate for bloggin’ purposes.

Listen. @A-Trak & @Chromeo.
Friday. 1 AM.
You probably know Dave1, electro-funk Prince known as Chromeo, and you may have heard me jab about Alain, keeper of my heart known as A-Trak. But these bad boys are also Brothers who came together this Friday night for Brooklyn-based Fool’s Gold. Thanks to Jetsetter, yeah I’m talking to you, I was a bit late and well, drunk. But @KirillWasHere was there to make sure you got a glimpse into the show. They kicked people out, they let them back it, they told them to leave, they opened the doors. It was a perfect lesson in hard-to-get. Boys I hope you were paying attention.
